Are you getting hygge?  Without even knowing it, you’re probably a big fan of this concept, much like we are…

Hygge,” is a Danish and Norwegian word for a mood of cosiness and comfortable conviviality with feelings of wellness and contentment. It is a concept that encompasses the feeling of quiet comfort, including elements of plush textures, greenery, warm, neutral shades, and memory invoking scents.

Before we get too carried away with happy thoughts and cosiness, you might be wondering how do I pronounce Hygge?   Hygge is pronounced HOO-gah. Hygge can be noun, a verb, and an adjective.  Try using it when talking to someone today!

Let’s get hygge (HOO-gah) with it!

So how does someone practice hygge?

Well the answer is a lot simpler than you may have thought…

From reading a great book to lighting a candle and sipping hot cocoa, “hygge” can be expressed in a multitude of different ways, but the premise is still the same: contentment.  The true essence of hygge is the pursuit of everyday happiness, appreciating the simple things in life; basically it’s like a hug, just without the physical touch.  The best part is that you can achieve hygge with absolutely any budget!

The Danes even have a fabulous word Hyggebukser – that pair of pants you’d never be caught dead wearing in public, but practically live in when you’re at home on the weekends binging on Netflix.

A scented candle is one of the best little luxuries in life… If you ask a Danish person, they’re likely to tell you that candles are the most important part of creating a hyggelig atmosphere at home. A candle creates Hygge as it makes the atmosphere more intimate and cosy. The candlelight is not too bright and brings a feeling of comfort. It is a simple kind of daily moment.  The Danes lights candles in every room, casting their soft glow around the space and filling it up with the delicious scents of choice.  The Danes burn a whopping 13 pounds of candle wax a year per capita.   So we say, the first step to creating the perfect hyggelig home is filling it with the beautiful glow of candles.

We recommend picking your favourite scents for each season to keep the essence of Hygge alive all year round.  Together with the candles goes some kind of drink you enjoy; Hot chocolate, coffee or tea or maybe a bottle of wine.  A comfy blanket is most definitely a must, as if we needed an excuse.   For the perfect hyggelig experience, try reading a book in this little cocoon of cosy that you created for yourself.
