How to Use Macadamia Oil in Soap Making
Macadamia oil is a luxurious ingredient that adds moisturising, conditioning, and skin-nourishing benefits to handmade soaps. It is high in oleic acid, palmitoleic acid, and antioxidants, making it perfect for dry or mature skin formulations.
1. Recommended Usage Rates
- As a Base Oil: Macadamia oil can make up to 50% of total oils in cold or hot process soap. Similar to olive oil, it produces a mild, conditioning lather and creates a stable, luxurious bar.
- For Superfatting: Use 3–5% of total oils at the end of the cook in hot process soap to maximize its skin-nourishing benefits.
2. Adding Macadamia Oil to Cold Process Soap
- Weigh and include macadamia oil as part of the total oil formulation.
- Best combined with harder oils (such as coconut, palm, or shea butter) to balance its softness.
3. Adding Macadamia Oil to Hot Process Soap
- Can be added at the beginning with other oils or as a superfatting oil after the soap has finished cooking.
- Adding it after the cook helps retain more of its moisturising and conditioning properties.
4. Best Combinations for Soap Making
- Works well with olive oil, shea butter, coconut oil, and cocoa butter for a well-balanced bar.
- Pair with essential oils like lavender, rose, or sandalwood for a luxurious, spa-like experience.
