    User Instructions:

Working with beeswax requires careful attention to temperature control, as it has a relatively low melting point compared to other waxes. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to work with beeswax.

    Melting:

    • Prepare the Double Boiler Setup: Beeswax is best melted using a double boiler method to prevent overheating and potential fire hazards. Fill the lower pot of the double boiler with water and bring it to a simmer. Place the beeswax in the upper pot, ensuring it doesn’t touch the water directly.
    • Monitor the Melting Process: Keep a close eye on the beeswax as it melts. The ideal melting temperature for beeswax is between 70-75°C. Avoid exceeding 77°C, as this can cause discolouration and loss of aroma.
    • Avoid Overheating: Never leave the melting beeswax unattended. Beeswax has a flashpoint of 204°C, which means it can ignite if it gets too hot. Use a thermometer to monitor the temperature and adjust the heat as needed.

    Adding Fragrance or Colour:

    • If you plan to add fragrance or colour to your beeswax, do so after the wax has melted and cooled slightly to around 65°C. This will help preserve the integrity of the fragrance and prevent discolouration.

    Pouring and Cooling:

    • Once the beeswax is melted and any additives have been incorporated, carefully pour it into your prepared moulds/containers. Allow the candles to cool completely before removing them from the moulds/containers. Beeswax candles can take several hours to cool fully depending on the size of the mould used.

    Storing Beeswax:

    • Store unused beeswax in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Beeswax can be stored in blocks, beads, sheets, or milled depending on your preference.

A soy/beeswax blend is a popular choice for candle making because it combines the best of both waxes. Soy wax is a clean-burning wax that produces a good fragrance throw, while -beeswax is a hard wax that holds its shape well and has a long burn time. Cure time is 7-10 days.

Here is a simple soy/beeswax blend recipe:

    • 85% soy wax
    • 15% beeswax

This blend is a good starting point, but you can adjust the ratio of soy wax to beeswax to suit your preferences. For example, if you want a candle with a stronger fragrance throw, you can use more soy wax. If you want a candle with a longer burn time, you can use more beeswax. Too much beeswax will shrink your candle and make it pop out of the jar.

To make a soy/beeswax blend candle, simply melt the two waxes together in a double boiler. Once the waxes are melted, add any fragrance or colour that you like. Then, pour the wax into your prepared candle containers and allow them to cool completely before trimming the wicks.
