We recommend a 6% fragrance load using our fragrance range. Use a digital thermometer to measure the correct temperatures of the wax.
Preparation:
- First, lay down a few newspapers because pouring candles can be messy. Ensure that you only work on a sturdy surface and your candle wicks are firmly in place. Mark the maximum fill line with a non-permanent marker to ensure that the jars are not over-filled.
Step 1 – Melting
- Wax should be melted in a bain-marie and should not be exposed to direct heat.
- Slowly melt your wax over a low heat to reach between 70℃ and 80℃. The wax should turn a darker hue, close to golden in colour
- Take care not to heat the wax over 80℃ because this can influence the setting and performance of the wax. Overheated wax is very opaque in colour and can result in injury. It can also cause discolouration in the final product.
Step 2 – Adding Colour and Fragrance
- Add fragrance at 65℃ – 68℃ and stir gently for a minute. (68℃ is mostly used)
- If you are adding colour, it’s best to add it before the fragrance to ensure that the colour blends well with the wax.
Step 3 – Pouring
- Once your fragrance and colour has blended, and the wax has cooled down to approx. 58-59/60℃ it is ready to be poured. The wax will have a slight cloudy appearance, but mostly clear. If the wax is too cool, it will create cavities in the way when drying the first pour.
- Fill the container and leave 1-2cm at the maximum filling line for the top-up. Leave at least 200 – 500ml of wax for the topping, depending on the volume of candles made.
- It is important to have the containers at the same temperature as the ambient room temperature.
Step 4 – Curing & Topping up
- Allow wax to cure for 12 hours.
- Warm up the remainder of the wax using a small bain-marie to between 55℃ and 57℃. The wax will have a slight milky appearance. This will ensure a creamy and smooth finish.
- In conclusion, top up the final layer of the candle to the maximum marked fill line of your containers. Then allow to set for 14 days.
